The skewed distribution of resources in the world germinates conflict in society and among nations. The insatiable greed of haves to acquire more is depriving have‐nots of their survivability. A study by World University for development economic research at United Nations University reports that the richest 1% of adult alone owned 40% of global assets in the year 2000. The three richest person possess more financial assets than the lowest 48 nations. This economic inequality creates conflict between haves and have‐nots which come to fore in the garb of religious conflict, sectarian conflict, cast conflict, racial conflict, and civilization conflict. The violent reaction of deprived and suppressed is termed as terrorism, naxalism, militancy etc. In fact, all these originate from the fight for resources. It is a full moonlit night and I am traveling by a train. Sampoorn kranti express train is in its full motion to reach its destination the next day. The train is running through the Gangetic plain disturbing tranquility of this area. The silver sheet of moonlight spreading in the plain presents an attractive scene. The moon now hides in the cloud and darkness prevails all around. This temporary darkness reminds us of short phase of gloom in our lives. The moon appears once again and removes darkness. There is always dawn(light) after dark night. The train is crossing an overbridge now. The river beneath has plenty of water which glistens on reflection of light. This east flowing river will meet the Ganges and will lose its own identity. The Ganges which originates from Gangotri in Uttrakhand will eventually fall in the Bay of Bengal. Primitive man lived in a stateless society with unlimited sovereignty. Human Life was nasty, brutish and short. There was "war of all against all". People realised need of an entity which might protect their interest. They created state and surrendered their sovereignty to it. Hobbes, Lockes and Rousseau termed it "Social Contract" . State in turn ensured rule of law and protected interest of its people.. India became a democratic republic after independence and opted for secularism and socialism to ensure justice, liberty and equality to all of its citizens. Indian populace comprises of Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians and followers of many other religious groups. These groups have many sects within it. People have identity on religious, regional, lingual and cultural bases. We witness conflict among groups for a number of reasons. Dowry as per Webster's dictionary is the money, goods, or estate that a woman brings to her husband. As per the dowry prohibition act 1961, dowry means any property or valuable security to be given or agreed to be given directly or indirectly - By one party to the marriage to other party to the marriage; or By the parents of either party to a marriage or by any other person, to either party to the marriage or any other person; Menace of dowry has spread to every section of Indian society irrespective of religious, regional, cultural groups because of insatiable materialism, greed and tendency to easy acquisition of wealth.
